To my patients:

 

The phoropter. In the exam room, you each would gaze through the lenses of this mechanical mask-looking marvel, helping me to figure out your best prescription. Spinning its dials and clicking its levers, I’d query, “Which is better, one or two?” Recently I calculated roughly how many times I had asked that question over the years.The answer: 2,448,000. 

 

In 1984, fresh out of optometry school, I started working in my first office, which was located in the downstairs of my house in Halifax borough. Two moves later, in 2008, I began practicing at the present location, which I valued for its ample size, accessibility and up-to-date optometric technology, all in a space that had such a homey feel. I hoped that, when I was ready to retire, I’d find someone to continue to work in the office, providing services for the community I’d come to cherish.

 

As I was nearing my 70th birthday, with thoughts of retirement more persistently entering my mind, I had a fortuitous meeting with Doctors Irma and Nicholas Bixler. I’m pleased to announce that the Bixlers now own the practice! Knowing they will continue to provide dedicated eye care services to the greater Halifax area means the world to me. My wonderful staff has opted to stay on, which will also be a great asset. 

 

For over four decades, I was blessed that you entrusted your eyecare needs to me. I enjoyed getting to know all of you, and many of you have become like my extended family. After all those years, I’ve moved on to the next phase in my life, and now it’s the Bixlers’ turn. 

 

At this point, I have no specific plans for what I’ll do during my retirement. I have four kids and two grandchildren, and of course my wife, Janna, of 44+ years. It will be nice to spend more time with all of them. I like to play and listen to music, work with wood, and refinish furniture. If you find me hiking, e-biking or kayaking, please say hello. I may not remember your name, but I  probably will remember your prescription.
